Our puppified packaging
You may have have seen some of the parody packaging in our videos. Those dog versions of your favorite iconic brands:
We’ve done fast food — Puptucky Fried Chicken, Pawco Bell, Jollibark…
Canned foods like SPUP, Chef Boyardog and Houndz Beans…
And now Cedric and Edith even have their own doggy “liquor” bar with Dog Julio, Absolut Dogka and other iconic bottles.
Hi, it’s me, Joelle—Cedric & Edith’s mom—and I’m going to answer some of your commonly asked questions about the props!
Are these real doggy products I can get somewhere?
They are one-of-a-kind props that I make especially for the videos, so they only exist in our little “thecedlife” universe for now.
Are they sponsored by the brands?
Nope. None of the parody products are ads or sponsored by any brand. It’s done purely out of fun, and because I wish a world with these things actually existed.
How do you make them?
I’m a graphic designer!
First I get the bottle, box or bag that looks like the actual product. I measure and sometimes make a cut out prototype. Then, I use Adobe illustrator to design the label. Once it’s designed, I print it out on sticker paper.
There’s usually some cutting involved, and then I just stick the labels on. The doggy liquor bottles are often the actual liquor bottles that I empty and wash before using for the dogs. (I might have had a margarita with the tequila…) The boxes and bags are usually just purchased on Amazon.
How long does it take?
I like incorporating fonts and premade graphics from Envato when making the labels, so I’m not spending TOO much time designing from scratch. It usually takes me 30 minutes to an hour to craft one label, depending on how complicated it is.
Why don’t you make and sell them for real? You could make MILLIONS!
Haha, if only it were that easy.
There’s been a lot of interest for the props (especially the doggy liquor) and if we had unlimited resources we would LOVE to make them real products for you. It would be my dream to have a doggy grocery store with everything included.
But…bringing a product to life is not simple nor straightforward, especially for a small business like us. Speaking from experience, getting a product off the ground is one long obstacle course. From formulating, sourcing quality ingredients, packaging, having the products tested, finding trustworthy manufacturers…
There’s just so much that goes into a product behind the scenes.
Do you have a big team?
In case you don’t know, we’re a team of two. :) There’s me (Joelle) and my partner, Robin. We run everything behind thecedlife and Precious Creatures Co, including this newsletter!
The products we do sell we’ve chosen to make because we think they bring you the most value and align with our mission— helping you feed your dog homemade food. Each one was an uphill climb to make happen, but well worth it.
We are continuing to innovate and have some exciting launches for the holiday season coming up, so stay tuned.
That’s it for this week,
Joelle, Robin, Cedric & Edith
