The Mediterranean diet is associated with lower rates of chronic disease and mortality in people. While research on dog mortality and specific diet are few, we have evidence that eating habits are related to longevity in dogs. Some factors that are associated with longer, healthier lives include whole food diets, eating less and having fewer meals.
Important: This recipe is balanced IF you serve it with your dog’s dose of a sea kelp supplement (for iodine). You can find pure sea kelp powder or other supplements that include iodine in any pet shop. Just be sure to follow the dose recommendation as you also don’t want to overdo it.
Actual nutrients may differ based on ingredients used. I try to use things up when I can and threw in some random leftover veggies—so that’s the green you see in the photos!

Ingredients
4 eggs, save 2 shells
8 oz (225g) ground beef
3 oz (85g) beef liver, chopped small
4 oz (113g) carrots, chopped small
4 oz (113g) beets, chopped small
1.8 oz (50g) oysters
1 cup (80g) rolled oats
2 cups (480ml) water
1 tablespoon olive oil
Directions
Soak oysters in cold water for 10 minutes to remove excess salt. Strain.
In a large pan add the ground beef, liver, carrots, beets, and oysters. Cook for about 5 minutes until meat browns.
Add oats and 2 cups (480ml) water to the pan. Bring to a boil on medium-high heat. Stir. Turn heat down to low, cover and cook for 15-20 minutes.
Crack eggs into the pan. Crush up two of the eggshells (pestle and mortar works great) and sprinkle them in as well. Cover and cook on low until eggs are just set (about 5 minutes).
Stir everything together. Let cool before serving.
I serve this with a sea kelp supplement and omega oil. The dogs love it!
